  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Edson Castillo suffered a nasty injury on Saturday in Kaizer Chiefs' 1-0 Premier Soccer League loss against SuperSport United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Despite the seriousness of the matter, the referee ignored calls for a penalty and Bilal Baloyi walked scot-free.

Minutes later, Castillo was subbed and has since been ruled out until next year.

Safa Gauteng Referees' boss has now explained why the officials were wrong not to award Amakhosi a penalty.

    WHAT HLUNGWANI SAID

"The law says kicking an opponent is a foul. The law says kicking an opponent is a foul," he told Sport’s Soccerzone.

"The ball goes in the penalty area, a 50-50, and then who kicked who? Here you can see that Castillo got the ball, and Baloyi kicks an opponent.

"So, kicking an opponent in the penalty area, a penalty should’ve been awarded. It was not given, unfortunately."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chiefs have now suffered two controversial calls that have seen them lose massive games in the ongoing season.

The first incident was in the Premier Soccer League game against Mamelodi Sundowns at the FNB Stadium, a match the latter controversially won 2-1 with Iqraam Rayners scoring what some felt was an illegal goal as Lucas Ribeiro was caught in an arguably offside position during the build-up.

The latest one will pile pressure on the Premier Soccer League management and Safa to consider introducing VAR as soon as possible.

    WHAT NEXT?

Chiefs will now have to do without the services of Castillo for some time now, but that creates a chance for Njabulo Blom to push Yusuf Maart to give his best.

Maart has not been consistent for the Glamour Boys while Blom was lacking match fitness when he joined the Soweto giants.
