    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs are almost guaranteed a place in the Caf Confederation Cup for next season after reaching the Nedbank Cup final, where they will play defending champions Orlando Pirates.

The winner of the annual tournament represents the country in Africa's second-tier competition.

Bucs' chances of finishing second in the Premier Soccer League are high, meaning they will play in the Caf Champions League.

If that happens, Amakhosi will have a chance to dine with the big boys on the continent regardless of the Nedbank Cup final result.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The last time Chiefs played in Caf competitions was in the 2020/21 season when they reached the Caf Champions League final, but were undone by Al Ahly.

Recently, Caf President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed his delight with Chiefs' potential return to inter-club competitions, insisting it will help Mzansi football grow.

Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates have been regulars in Caf competitions.

Ahead of the PSL game against Marumo Gallants, Ashley du Preez has echoed the sentiments made by Motsepe, saying the Soweto giants are big, not only in the country, but in Africa at large.

    WHAT DU PREEZ SAID

“You know, we are the biggest team in Africa, so every team would like to face Kaizer Chiefs,” the 27-year-old told the media.

“We want to compete on the highest level with Stellenbosch, Pirates, and Sundowns, who have been there and are doing great in the [Caf] competitions.

“So I think people would love to see Chiefs also on that stage," Du Preez continued.

"So any team would like to play against Chiefs, and the fans would be so happy for us to be in that [Caf Confederation Cup] competition, and football in Africa would be so much better," he concluded.

    WHAT NEXT?

Despite reaching the Nedbank Cup final, Chiefs are at risk of missing the MTN8 for the second season in a row.

They need to ensure they get as many wins as possible from the remaining five games in the PSL to ensure they finish inside the top eight by the end of the ongoing campaign.
