    WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Shane McGregor has revealed he is not satisfied with the quality of the current squad.

McGregor's concern comes despite Amakhosi fighting hard to progress to the Nedbank Cup final at the expense of Mamelodi Sundowns.

Against the odds, the Soweto giants fought back after going down and eventually eliminated Sundowns in the semi-finals.

The retired striker says he is analysing Chiefs' squad across the seasons so far and not based on their performance against the Tshwane giants.

    WHAT MCGREGOR SAID

“It's a good result for Chiefs. They have been struggling and not performing well this season, but they managed to reach the final,” McGregor told KickOff.

“If reaching the final is enough to make the supporters happy, then so be it. However, I’ll consider the entire season. It has been disappointing, and that doesn’t change the fact that it’s been a bad year.

"They must win the Nedbank Cup. If they don’t, they’ll be back to square one. They haven't accomplished much this year or in recent years.

"While reaching a cup final is an achievement, they need to think about the future. Can this team take them to greater heights? They need to bring in quality players because the current squad is not good enough," he continued.

    WHAT IS MORE

While stressing his point that the current squad lacks quality, McGregor said he is worried that the club might not deliver the cup against Orlando Pirates because of the inconsistency witnessed.

"Let’s be honest, Sundowns looked very tired. No excuses. If that’s the team that’s going to move Chiefs forward... I don’t think so," he said.

"In the past, Chiefs, like many teams, have shown too much respect to Sundowns, out of fear, but this time, Chiefs applied pressure.

"As for facing Pirates in the final, the problem is that we don’t know which Chiefs team will show up at Moses Mabhida Stadium. I know they have a chance.

"They’ve had one good game this season, but then followed it with three or four poor performances. Consistency has been an issue. It’s a cup final, and if they can’t elevate their game on such an important occasion, they may not succeed.

"I believe the fans must not get too optimistic. There is still much work to be done, and they need to bring in new players now. They cannot afford to wait for next year," the former SuperSport United star continued.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Given how they have struggled for consistency, Chiefs are expected to strengthen the playing unit by signing more in the next transfer window.

They have been linked with Oswin Appollis of Polokwane City and Fawaaz Basadien of Stellenbosch. The two are also understood to be on the radar of Pirates.

Recently, ex-Pirates' Jabu Mahlangu urged Chiefs to sign Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Sphelele Mkhulise. The 29-year-old could leave the Tshwane giants because his contract will end in a matter of months, making him available for his suitors.

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHIEFS?

Amakhosi's current focus is on the remaining games for the season.

They have struggled in the Premier Soccer League, but the Nedbank Cup could offer them a lifeline, including qualification to the Caf Confederation Cup. This will happen if they beat Pirates in the final.

The Glamour Boys are set to face Chippa United in a league game on April 19.
