Mayo has been out of Bafana for almost a year now
His move to Algeria was expected to boost his international career
Mayo's father Patrick feels his son is national team material
This is despite the 26-year-old struggling to score regularly for Algerian side CR Belouizdad. He has managed just three goals in 17 appearances across all competitions.
But his father Patrick feels his son is a quality player who deserves to play for the national team.

WHAT PATRICK SAID
“He’s a quality player; he has showcased what he’s capable of doing on the field. All he has to do is to be consistent in his performances at the club,” Patrick Mayo told FARPost.
“He has to push and he will be back playing in the national team, that’s where I would like to see him play; representing his nation.
“There’s no greater joy than playing for your national team. I’m glad he has been there, so it won’t be something new to him. For now, he has to push and work hard.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Interestingly, it is Hugo Broos who gave Mayo his national team debut in an international friendly match against Sierra Leone in September 2022.
But since March 2024, the former Cape Town City star has not featured for Bafana.
Mayo is a player with international experience after he went to the 2015 Fifa Under-17 World Cup as well as the 2017 Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

WHAT NEXT FOR MAYO?
With the 2025 Afcon finals on the horizon, this is likely to see competition for national team jerseys stiffen.
That could also push Mayo to turn himself into a prolific scorer in Algeria and attract the attention of Broos.
