    Difficult time for Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs were knocked out of the Carling Knockout by Stellenbosch last weekend via a penalty shootout following a goalless affair after extra time. That result came on the backdrop of a difficult run in recent games. Former Chiefs forward Marks Maponyane has attributed some of Amakhosi's problems to a lack of leadership on the pitch as centre-backs Zitha Kwinika and Inaco Miguel exchange the armband.

Maponyane insists no one is in charge at Chiefs

“You must have a team that has a leader who leads by example, and I don’t see that happening. If you look at Miguel, you think that the guy is not really in charge, and then you look to see who can be in charge, but I don’t see anyone who can be in charge because they have not shown leadership at all,” Maponyane said as per Phakaaathi.
“You need that leadership quality on the pitch, and you don’t always need it on the bench. Sometimes you find that you have to make changes as a captain, and then you’ll explain those changes to the coach later, and you don’t wait until the coach says, ‘can’t you see that we are suffering here and there’.
“So, that leadership is not there, and I just wonder what goes through their minds when they play the same way all the time and just rush things and nothing works," added the former Bafana Bafana star, who also played for Orlando Pirates. "I don’t understand when [Makabi] Lilepo goes 200 km per hour and goes out of the pitch. I ask myself if the ground is too small or if the guy is too fast, and all those things are confusing sometimes.”

    Chiefs swimming against the tide

Amid a leadership crisis pointed to by Maponyane, Chiefs season seems to have been plunged into an ocean of chaos, and the Soweto giants are now swimming against the tide.
From coach Nasreddine Nabi being on his way out of Naturena, to inconsistent results, Amakhosi risk ending the term empty-handed without any trophy after starting their Premier Soccer League campaign on a high.
Following elimination from the Carling Knockout, Chiefs are now left with the Nedbank Cup, PSL title and CAF Confederation Cup to compete for.

FIFA break, time to fix things?

The current FIFA break might be an opportunity for the Soweto giants to work on their shortcomings, especially since they have a few players on international duty.

They return to competitive football on October 18 with a CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round, first leg clash with AS Simba.
