    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly chasing the signature of Pyramids forward Fiston Mayele who finished the just-ended season as the Caf Champions League top scorer with nine goals.

It is not the first time for Amakhosi to chase after Mayele whom they started pursuing during the player's time at Young Africans, before Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi contacted him in December 2024.

Former Chiefs forward Kanga Nzenza now claims he tried to sound Bobby Motaung about Mayele, but the Amakhosi football manager ignored him.

    WHAT NZENZA SAID

"I once advised Chiefs to acquire Mayele," says Nzenza as per KickOff.

"Just look at what he is doing now. I was clear that Chiefs needed to sign him because he has the ability to do well here. He can blend well with the Chiefs players and has been performing well, even though he may not be in top form at the moment.

"I even mentioned to KickOff.com that I was struggling to reach Bobby Motaung about Mayele because he is always busy. My plea was that Chiefs must sign him. They received my message, but they didn’t act on it," added the retired footballer.

"At the time, he was playing for Yanga in Tanzania, but then a club from Egypt signed him.  He's an exceptional player. Whenever he comes to play for the national team, they refer to him as a super sub.

"Whenever he comes on, he changes the game. Look at how Sundowns lost the [Caf] Champions League because of him."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mayele's profile continues to rise, especially after scoring a brace which knocked Orlando Pirates out of the Caf Champions League at the semi-final stage.

He then found the back of the net in the second leg of the Champions League final against Mamelodi Sundowns last weekend.

Chiefs have reportedly reignited their interest in the DR Congo international and Nabi is said to have travelled to Egypt to try and convince the striker to join Amakhosi.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAYELE?

Mayele still has a year left on his Pyramids contract and with him being hot property, it remains to be seen if the Egyptian moneybags will move in to extend his stay.

Being still contracted to Pyramids will not make him cheap should Chiefs seriously pursue him.
