    WHAT HAPPENED?

Mamelodi Sundowns' bid to win the Caf Champions League was dashed on Sunday by Pyramids.

The Egyptian Premier League outfit forced Masandawana to a 1-1 draw in Mzansi before winning at home 2-1 to claim a 3-2 victory, on aggregate.

Despite their heavy investment this season, the Brazilians have ended the campaign with one trophy, the Premier Soccer League.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rhulani Mokwena spent two seasons with the club and failed to get past the semi-final hurdle on two occasions.

His successor, Manqoba Mngqithi, was shown the door for a poor start in the just-concluded campaign.

Miguel Cardoso, who had reached the final with Esperance last season, was brought in to deliver the elusive trophy, but after failing, former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye feels he should be dismissed.

He has further challenged Mokwena and Sundowns to re-unite and take the club forward.

    WHAT KHANYE SAID

“If we can be honest, they signed him [Cardoso] because of the Champions League, not because Rhulani did anything wrong,” he told iDiski Times.

“So, they must get rid of him, too. For me, I’d go to Rhulani, and maybe he, too, can humble himself as he is a free agent, come back and focus on your coaching, because you are so talented, you are a genius.

“South Africa needs to hear me well on this one, with this guy it’s not only Sundowns that benefits, but the whole nation," Khanye added.

"We got to the [2023] Afcon because of Sundowns, whether someone doesn’t believe this, I don’t care because we are there because of Sundowns, and Rhulani took the best out of those players.

"Credit to Pitso [Mosimane] for bringing in Rhulani and Rhulani for applying himself.

“If you are asking me, I was going to get rid of him [Cardoso] because they brought him for the Champions League, and how much have they spent on the likes of [Arthur] Sales and [Lucas] Suarez?

"I mean, the coach has every type of player," Khanye concluded.

    WHAT NEXT?

It is interesting to see what Sundowns management will decide after the conclusion of the expanded 2025 Fifa Club World Cup.

There are many chances that the display in the global competition will be used to determine whether the tactician is retained or not.
