    WHAT HAPPENED?

    During their rebuilding process, Kaizer Chiefs were desperate to land Asanele Velebayi after his team, Cape Town Spurs, was relegated to the National First Division.

    The Soweto giants reportedly offered the Urban Warriors R4 million for the services of the attacker, but were turned down.

    The Glamour Boys can now get their man for free if they so wish, after Spurs' relegation to the South African third tier.

    WHAT WAS SAID

    "Cape Town Spurs captain Asanele Velebayi is now a free agent after the Urban Warriors were relegated to the amateur ranks on Sunday," SABC Sport reported.
    "The Premier Soccer League only has two tiers that are classified as professional, and that is the Betway Premiership and the National First Division, referred to as the Motsepe Foundation Championship for sponsorship reasons.
    "is contract is of a professional nature, and as far as I understand the procedures, Asanele and his teammates are effectively free agents and can get their clearances tomorrow if need be,” they concluded.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    Chiefs have had problems in the attacking department, struggling to score goals as seen in the concluded season.

    Amakhosi will be in the market for new players to sharpen their attack, explaining why Velebayi might be valuable for them.

    The Soweto giants are expected to challenge for the Premier Soccer League and other domestic competitions.

    Nasreddine Nabi's men also managed to get the Caf Confederation Cup ticket for the 2025/26 campaign.
