    WHAT HAPPENED?

    South Africa were crowned Africa Under-20 Cup of Nations after edging Morocco 1-0 at Cairo International Stadium on Sunday.

    It was the first time form Amajita to win the continental competition and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Gomolemo Kekana struck with 20 minutes to go to help Raymond Mdaka's side claim victory.

    Morocco, whose squad was dominated by European-based players including Jones El-Abdellaoui of Celta Vigo, Montpellier's Othmane Maamma, Lens midfielder Ismaël Aouad, Ismaël Baouf defender and Monaco goalkeeper Yanis Benchaouch, were the favourites to win the final, but they were stunned by South Africa.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    To assert their dominance, South Africa had Stellenbosch defender Tylon Smith named as the Man of the Tournament.

    Portugal-based goalkeeper Fletcher Smythe Lowe grabbed the Golden Glove award after managing to keep four clean sheets in this tournament.

    After impressing in Egypt, some Amajita players are expected to break into Hugo Broos' senior national team.

    WHAT NEXT?

    After some Premier Soccer League teams failed to release their players, some of them would be keen to go to the World Cup.

    Mdaka will now be preparing for the World Cup, which will be hosted by Chile in September.
