    WHAT HAPPENED?

Thulani Serero returns to South African football after more than a decade abroad. He initially left in May 2011 to join Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam following an outstanding season under Foppe De Haan at Ajax's sister club in Cape Town.

That year, the young midfielder won several individual awards, including PSL Footballer of the Year and PSL Player of the Season.

Serero spent six years at Ajax before moving to Vitesse, where he played for two seasons. He later joined UAE’s Al Jazira, winning the Best Foreign Player award, and most recently played for Khor Fakkan.

Now back home, Cape Town City has confirmed the 34-year-old will wear the number eight jersey, a number previously worn by club legends like Teko Modise and Lebo Manyama, the latter now serving as the club’s assistant coach.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Muhsin Ertugral's side has struggled with creativity and goal-scoring this season, only managing 12 goals in 19 league matches so far and their current top scorer, Amadou Soukouna, has netted just three times in 18 appearances across all competitions.

Serero’s arrival is expected to strengthen the Citizens’ attack in the final third.

He joins a talented squad featuring Kamohelo Mokotjo and Haashim Domingo, both with European experience.

His leadership and global experience will also benefit young talents like Jaedin Rhodes, Gabriel Amato, Shakeel April, and Emile Witbooi.

    WHAT NEXT FOR CITY?

Cape Town City will face AmaZulu in their next league encounter away in Durban on Sunday March 2, with kick off scheduled for 15h30.

They face a Usuthu side who are currently in fifth place in the league with 26 points after 19 matches, although all is not rosy in the camp after co-coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi departure was announced earlier in the week.

The Citizen's boss Muhsin Ertugral has already expressed his excitement at getting Serero into his team so it will be no surprise if the veteran midfielder goes straight onto the starting XI for the clash against AmaZulu.
