The Confederation of African Football has bumped up the cheese for this year's Africa Cup of Nations as the champions will receive a staggering USD 7 000 000.The runners-up, meanwhile, are set to pocket the same amount that inaugural <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/african-super-league-teams-prize-money-format-and-everything-we-know-so-far/bltc2902c3d060913a9#cs6c0d0b1688b134ee" target="_blank">African Football League</a> champions <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/team/mamelodi-sundowns-fc/3h2hc3qy5uritiscjfq27bv3a" target="_blank">Mamelodi Sundowns</a> bagged for their success in the pilot project, which is designed to rival the <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/caf-champions-league-group-stage-format-results-prize-money-and-everything-you-need-to-know/blt4f3e756de75aba6c" target="_blank">Caf Champions League</a>.

WHAT HAPPENED

The new prize money is almost double what Senegal received in 2021 when <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/senegal-captain-sadio-mane-evaluates-chances-of-successfully-defending-africa-cup-of-nations-in-ivory-coast/blt471183c141718490" target="_blank">Sadio Mane</a> inspired The Lions of Teranga to the title over his former Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah and his Egyptian countryman.Caf has also increased the reward for the runners-up and semi-finalists, among other participants.Runners-up: USD 4 000 000 (approximately R74 million)Semi-finalists: USD 2 500 000 (approximately R46 million)Quarter-finalists: USD 1 300 000 (approximately R24 million)

THE BIGGER PICTURE

"Caf has made significant progress over the past two years in increasing the prize money of the Afcon and all its other major competitions."We have increased the prize money of the Afcon winner to USD 7 000 000 which is a 40% increase from the previous Afcon prize money," <a href="https://www.cafonline.com/caf-africa-cup-of-nations/news/caf-increases-afcon-prize-money-by-40/" target="_blank">said Caf president Patrice Motsepe, as per Caf Online</a>."I am confident that a portion of the Prize Money will contribute to developing football and also benefit all the football stakeholders, as well as assist our Member Associations with their administrations," he added.

WHAT CAF SAID

Defending champions Senegal will be expected to navigate the early stages and possibly reach the final, but will face strong competition from Egypt, Cameroon, Morocco, hosts Ivory Coast and glory-hungry Ghana and Nigeria, paired with outsiders South Africa.The race for the grand prize will kick-off this coming week on 13 January where Ivory Coast will get proceedings underway against Guinea Bissau.
