England v United States Live Commentary, 26/11/22

0 - 0
Al Bayt Stadium

England still haven't beaten USA at a World Cup then. Both teams will take the result and move on to those crucial last group games. That's all for now. Goodbye!
The draw keeps England top of Group B with four points, one ahead of Iran and two ahead of USA. They attempted just eight shots in this game, but while their attack was sub-par it's a good point for them in the circumstances. The Three Lions only need to avoid a heavy defeat against Wales to escape the group. The Stars and Stripes will need a win against Iran.
England and USA have played out the fifth goalless draw of this World Cup and counting. Neither team deserved to win this, in truth. The Americans worried the English in the first hour before Southgate's men managed to quieten things down. They couldn't break down their well-organised opponents though, and the game soon petered out.
90' + 4' Now it's USA's turn to possibly nick all three points as they get a set-piece opportunity. Pulisic opts to send the ball down the line instead of putting it into the danger area, and the referee immediately blows the final whistle.
90' + 3' Shaw whips the free-kick in from the left. It reaches Kane, who sends a powerful header wide from the centre of the box! That's as close to scoring as England have gotten.
90' + 2' Musah brings down Grealish to give England another late opportunity to steal a winner. It really would be theft. They've not been great.
90' + 1' Trippier aims his corner from the right towards Maguire. The England centre-back nods it down into the turf and up into Turner's embrace.
90' Henderson's fancy footwork gets a free-kick out of Pulisic. England take it quickly and pressure Moore into conceding a corner. There'll be four minutes of added time.
89' Moore is unsuccessful in picking out Reyna near the penalty spot. Any goal now would surely be the winner.
87' Kane threads the ball through to Rashford who tries to tiptoe his way into the area. He finds Grealish, who returns the favour, and Rashford curls a tame effort towards goal from the edge of the box. Turner catches it.
85' England earn a free-kick down their left. Shaw sends it towards Maguire at the far post. Ream gets to it first.
J. Sargent
H. Wright
United States
83' Wright's game is over too. The Norwich City forward Sargent takes his place up front for the Americans.
G. Reyna
T. Weah
United States
83' Two more changes for the USA. The son of one famous player replaces another as Reyna comes on for Weah.
82' Kane holds the ball up and waits for the arrival of Trippier. Henderson ends up sending a poor delivery into the arms of Turner.
80' Moore charges into the back of Grealish, giving England a free-kick in their own half. Tempers are starting to fray.
M. Rashford
B. Saka
78' England respond by making another change of their own. Rashford replaces Saka.
S. Moore
S. Dest
United States
78' Dest is the next USA player to make way, and he's not happy about it. Moore takes his place at right-back.
B. Aaronson
W. McKennie
United States
77' The Americans make some substitutions. McKennie's their first departure. Aaronson replaces him.
77' Kane works hard to squeeze the ball through to Saka, but the linesman's flag quickly goes up.
75' England are starting to gain a semblance of control. They still haven't laid a glove on USA yet though.
73' Grealish plays a one-two with Mount to scamper down the left. The Manchester City winger looks for Kane in the box. USA soon close the door.
71' Grealish's first action sees him draw in four American defenders. He might give England the threat they've lacked in this match.
J. Henderson
J. Bellingham
69' Bellingham leaves the pitch too. Henderson comes on to provide experience in midfield for England.
J. Grealish
R. Sterling
68' England decide that changes are needed. The quiet Sterling heads off. Grealish replaces him.
67' No player has made more headed clearances in a match in this World Cup than Maguire's six here. England have been able to rely on him so far.
66' Saka squares an inviting ball into the six-yard box, but there's no England man nearby to get on the end of it.
65' Dest gets too handsy with Sterling, fouling him and finally letting England breathe. Southgate is briefing Henderson in the technical area.
64' USA get another corner. This one's aimed towards the back post where Zimmerman is racing in again. Pickford leaps up and tips it out for a delivery from the opposite side.
62' Pulisic's long-range effort squirts through to an England defender. Mount pushes Adams over to give USA a free-kick down their right.
61' England smuggle the ball away but can't escape their own half. Southgate's men are getting a little nervy from this spell of American pressure.
60' USA force another corner. The momentum's with them. Maguire closes down Pulisic and the Americans will get another crack of the whip.
59' Zimmerman steams towards the far post to meet the corner. Maguire is in the right place to nod it away first. If he hadn't been, the American would have had a free header.
58' Pulisic goes for goal from outside the box. The shot takes a nick off a defender, so it's a corner to the Stars and Stripes. Pickford yells at his defenders to wake up.
57' The Americans retain possession as England hold their shape. Weah eventually scampers towards the byline. His cutback for Musah is intercepted by Bellingham.
55' Rice gets frustrated at his lack of passing options. It's a sign of how well USA are stifling England.
53' Mount can't make the most of Kane's deft flick towards him. Shaw and Weah tangle legs, leaving the Lille winger on the turf temporarily.
52' Robinson ventures out of position and Pulisic gives the ball away, allowing Saka to dart into the space left behind. Adams does a great job of outmuscling the England man to prevent him from causing more trouble.
50' Sterling looks to sneak in behind Adams. Robinson is aware of the danger and clears before the ball comes to the England winger.
48' Wright dribbles his way into the box and has a shot blocked by Stones. McKennie arrives to help out and blazes over from range.
47' Mount pressures Zimmerman into an awkward back-pass to Turner, who makes the best of it.
46' England start the second half on the back foot once more. Rice clears Robinson's hopeful cross.
46' The Americans get things going again. Neither side has made changes at half-time.
USA are good at keeping things tight early doors these days. The Americans haven't conceded a first-half goal in any of their last four World Cup matches, their longest such streak. England have to stay patient and also up their game. If they don't, they could get a nasty surprise like Germany and Argentina have had already this week.
An action-packed first half comes to an end. USA will be happier with how they played in the opening 45 minutes, looking lively and hitting the crossbar through Pulisic. England have been sluggish, but we know they can go up a gear or two. More to come!
45' + 1' There'll be just one added minute before the break. Mount fires low towards the bottom-left corner from the edge of the box. Turner denies the Chelsea midfielder, and England end the half with a corner that achieves little.
45' England create thier best chance of the game yet. Shaw reaches the byline and cuts back for Saka, who can't keep his hit from inside the six-yard box down.
44' Shaw spots Saka's run and sends a floated pass towards the far post. It's easily read by Turner.
43' England deal with this corner easily, but USA come straight back. Dest's latest cross hits Pulisic's shoulder and bounces wide of the left-hand post.
42' Dest powers forward on the overlap and takes on Maguire. The England centre-back keeps his eye on the ball and blocks the full-back's shot. USA have another corner.
41' Weah's cross from the right is too heavy for Pulisic. England look to break, but Saka's pass out wide is poor. Nothing's coming off for them currently.
40' USA's corner comes to nothing as England end up winning a free-kick. Still, their organisation and energy has unsettled the favourites.
38' McKennie wipes his hands on a photographer's bib before taking a long throw-in. It's taken down by Wright in the box. Stones holds his ground and hands USA a corner.
36' Shaw carries the ball forward and lays off to Mount whose cross doesn't land favourably for Bellingham. Mount's follow-up ball for Kane is too close to Turner. USA immediately counter and Stones is hassled into handing the Americans a throw-in. Good stuff, this.
35' Trippier floats the ball towards Maguire who can't do anything with it. USA will be the happier team as things stand.
34' England promptly go upfield and win a free-kick in a central position. USA are holding a high defensive line just outside the box.
32' Pulisic hits the crossbar! McKennie escapes the attention of Rice and passes inside to Musah. He moves the ball on to the Chelsea winger, whose strike ricochets against the woodwork! England have been warned.
31' Mount tussles with McKennie for the ball and catches an accidental arm in the face. The referee decides it's enough to blow his whistle for a foul.
30' Musah arrives first to Pulisic's backheel and gets taken out by Stones. USA free-kick.
28' USA are growing into the game. Musah's long-range rasper deflects off Rice and into the arms of Pickford.
26' McKennie spurns a great opportunity to open the scoring! The midfielder with multicoloured hair peels off his marker to reach a cross and lashes a half-volley over the crossbar.
24' Sterling dribbles inside from the left, attempting to unsettle Dest. The USA defence manages to intercept his eventual pass.
23' Mount pops up down England's right and earns his team a throw. Trippier ventures inside and soon loses out.
21' Bellingham takes the ball smartly down on the turn in midfield but can't keep hold of it. The 19-year-old is already quite the player.
20' Bellingham gets robbed by a combination of Musah and Pulisic. Dest tries to cause trouble for England from the right, but Pickford catches his cross.
19' England keep possession in their own half until Trippier's poor touch hands USA a throw-in. The Newcastle United man holds his hands up in apology.
17' USA get their first opportunity of the game. Wright reaches McKennie's cross into the box just before Maguire and heads well wide.
16' England patiently construct their next attack. Shaw's left-footed drive is easily caught by Turner.
14' Saka latches onto Trippier's pass down the line and sends a looping cross towards Kane, who can't connect cleanly with it. It's all England at the moment.
13' Kane looks to find Saka to his right, but the England captain's pass is cut out. USA are having to focus on defending for now.
11' Trippier's corner comes in and Stones gets his head to it. Maguire keeps it alive and cuts back for Mount, whose surface-to-air missile from outside the box is way over.
9' Chance for England! Bellingham slides Saka into the right of the box. The Arsenal winger centres the ball for Kane, whose shot is blocked. The Three Lions get their first corner of the game.
7' USA work the ball down their left through Robinson, Musah and Pulisic. Robinson's unable to keep it in play.
5' England build play from the back as Maguire and Stones pass the ball between themselves. USA are content sitting back so far.
3' Kane puts Turner under pressure, forcing the American goalkeeper to punt upfield. Both teams are easing into the game.
1' England, dressed all in white, get this game under way! USA are wearing their blue away kit.
This is the third World Cup meeting between England and USA, the last being a 1-1 draw at the 2010 tournament. The Americans famously beat the English 1-0 at the 1950 World Cup. Will we see a similarly seismic upset here? Let's find out!
There's just the one change to USA's starting line-up from their draw with Wales. Wright takes Sargent's place up front.
England name an unchanged starting 11 for the first time since doing so in the 2018 World Cup semi-final against Croatia. Sterling makes his 21st major tournament appearance for his country, drawing level with Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard. Only Ashley Cole (22) has made more appearances for the Three Lions at the World Cup and European Championship combined.

USA's 1-1 draw with Wales last time out got their World Cup campaign off to a decent start. With Iran now having got their first win though, this game won't be as much of a free hit for the Stars and Stripes as it might have been. A positive result for Gregg Berhalter's team here would be a big boost for their chances of escaping Group B.
Following a convincing 6-2 victory over Iran in their first outing, England come into this match looking to win their opening two games at the World Cup for a fourth time. Gareth Southgate's men were in fine fettle in the Iran game and can confirm their place in the last 16 with a win here.
