Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini buys new house nearer his players in effort to curb their drinking culture

EXCLUSIVE
By Greg Stobart | Northern Correspondent

Roberto Mancini has bought a £4 million mansion in a footballer hotspot which will allow him to keep a closer eye on his ill-disciplined Manchester City players, Goal.com UK can reveal.

The Italian is also giving coach Brian Kidd an increasingly prominent role as he looks to build an effective management system at Eastlands following rumours of dressing room unrest.

Mancini expressed his anger last week after it emerged that City quartet Adam Johnson, Gareth Barry, Joe Hart and Shay Given were involved in a late-night drinking session on a trip to Scotland.

It was the second time in a month that goalkeeper Hart had been pictured partying in a bar and Mancini criticised the drinking culture among British players.

The 45-year-old will soon be able to keep a closer eye on his errant stars after splashing £4m on a luxury mansion in the Cheshire footballers' belt of Alderley Edge.

Mancini is moving from his current home in Manchester city centre and will now be around the corner from the likes of Barry, Johnson, Hart and Emmanuel Adebayor, who all live in the town.

The former Inter coach is renowned for his disciplined approach to management but recognises the need to build a strong relationship with his star-studded squad.

Goal.com UK has learned that assistant manager Kidd has been taking on a higher profile within the set up as a buffer 'between' Mancini and his players.

Mancini has little interaction with the players away from the training ground and only really speaks to his Italian backroom staff, but he recognises the need for a more clearly defined relationship with his players.

Kidd will be central as the intermediary in this relationship as will, to a lesser extent, fellow coach David Platt, with both men also being lined up to speak more to the media.

Reports of tunnel bust-ups and unrest in the camp have been swirling around City in recent weeks and players will be encouraged to air any grievances to Kidd, who will in turn make them aware of Mancini's expectations of standards and behaviour.

Mancini believes he needs to change the mentality at Eastlands if City are to compete for the Premier League title.

“I knew it would be difficult, but I tell the players the job is football and with football you live very well,” he told the Daily Mail in September.

“It should not be impossible for you to compromise. And last year, I gave a little; not this year. This year we change.”

City sit fourth in the Premier League after 10 games but are already eight points behind leaders Chelsea and have lost their last two games, including a 2-1 defeat at Wolves last Saturday.
