Manchester City insist they have no plans to sell Sergio Aguero this summer, Goal understands.

Speaking after City’s 2-1 win against Swansea on Sunday, Aguero suggested that the club may not retain his services beyond the end of the current season.

Aguero has been named on the bench for City’s last two Premier League games, with new signing Gabriel Jesus taking his place in the line-up.

Jesus delights in Etihad double

Jesus has scored three times in those two games, including a dramatic late winner at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, and Pep Guardiola has praised the qualities he has brought to the team.

Aguero himself admits he needs to learn from the 19-year-old, but appeared fearful that he would fall permanently down the pecking order.

The 28-year-old also insists it is his intention to stay at the club, and that he has not thought about leaving, but he caused concern among the City support by hinting he could be sold.

“In three years my contract is up, that’s why I say I’m happy at the club,” he said when asked by Goal. “In these last three months that are left I have to help the club and as I say the club will decide if I have a place here or not.”

But senior City sources have told Goal that there is no desire whatsoever to let the Argentine go.

City boss Pep Guardiola has consistently said Aguero is crucial to his plans, and that was a stance he took again on Sunday evening when asked about the striker’s reaction to being left on the bench.

“It must not be easy,” the Catalan said. “I understand that. Sergio remains one of the most important players in our squad and what we have to do, he will be so, so important.

“He is going to play a lot of games, with Gabriel and without Gabriel, but today I decide to continue with these three guys [Jesus, Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane].”

Aguero signed a new contract at the start of 2016, and although it was never formally announced, the new deal runs until 2020.
