Bantu Mzwakali: Ajax Cape Town denied me the chance to play for a big club

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates target Bantu Mzwakali says Ajax Cape Town denied him a chance to play for a big club.

The attacking midfielder was repeatedly linked with the two PSL giants during his days with Ajax Cape Town, but a move to one of the Soweto giants never materialised.

“There was a lot of hype around me when I was still at Ajax. But you know in football, when you have reached your peak and it is your time to leave the club for a bigger club, you have to do it at that moment because if you don’t, it might never happen again,” Mzwakali said on The Citizen.

Mzwakali established himself as one of South Africa's top prospects while playing for the Mother City side having been nurtured in the club's academy.

The Cape Town-born attacker played an important role in helping Ajax clinch the 2015 MTN8 and finished second in the Nedbank Cup in the same year.

“They spoke to Ajax, but Ajax never spoke to me. Maybe if they had given me a chance to join a big club at that time I would probably be playing overseas now, but unfortunately I never got that chance," the former South Africa youth international continued.

“I mean, look at the league, you find a player who scores 15 goals in a season and you find that same player struggling the following season. I have to say Ajax should have given me a chance early, but they never did. Maybe I could have been a big star now," he added.

The Urban Warriors sold Mzwakali to Chippa United midway through last season, and he ended up joining Wits from the Chilli Boys ahead of the current campaign.

Mzwakali, who is competing with the likes of Elias Pelembe and Haashim Domingo, has made two appearances for PSL title-chasing Wits thus far.
