    WHAT HAPPENED?

Al Ahly failed to progress beyond the group stage at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

This was after they drew 0-0 with Inter Miami, lost 2-0 to Palmeiras and then drew 4-4 with FC Porto.

Following that outing, a Zamalek board member Ahmed Soliman has criticised Al Ahly coach Jose Riveiro.

    WHAT SOLIMAN SAID

"Al-Ahly spent huge sums on its signings, including signing Ahmed Mostafa Zizo for a hefty salary, but the results were disappointing. The team's participation in the World Cup can be described as zero," Soliman said, as per Soccer Laduma.

"Zizou did not perform at the expected level, while Spanish coach Jose Riveiro bears a large part of the responsibility due to his poor reading of the matches.

"Riveiro's appointment just two weeks before the tournament contributed to the team's inability to adapt to his style, which negatively impacted performance."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

This is not the first time for Riveiro to be criticised by Egyptians for Al Ahly performances at the Club World Cup.

The Cairo giants' former defender Rabie Yassin came out guns blazing, tearing the Spaniard's decisions in team selection.

Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Mido also accused Riveiro of "lacking a clear vision."

    WHAT NEXT FOR RIVEIRO?

To silence his critics, Riveiro will have to help Al Ahly to total dominance in domestic football in Egypt and especially in Africa by winning the CAF Champions League.

Struggling to do that will see Egyptian football legends go after Riveiro like they have always done to his predecessors.
