    WHAT HAPPENED?

Goals from Granit Xhaka and Robert Andrich, either side of Dominik Kohr's goal for 10-man Mainz, secured table-toppers Leverkusen all three points on Friday night. The result meant Xabi Alonso's side are now unbeaten in 33 games in all competitions this season - breaking Bayern's record in the process.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Leverkusen, so often the nearly men of German football, are on course to win their first-ever Bundesliga trophy, with Alonso's team 11 points clear of second-placed Bayern with 11 matches of the season remaining. They are also still in the Europa League and DFB-Pokal.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Leverkusen have been Bundesliga runners-up on five occasions, the most recent of which was back in the 2010/11 season. The last time they lifted silverware was way back in 1993 when they won the DFB-Pokal trophy.

  • WHAT NEXT?

Leverkusen next face Koln on March 3 but Harry Kane's Bayern play twice before then; first at home to RB Leipzig on Saturday and then away to Freiburg on March 1. Thomas Tuchel's men will need to win both to stand any chance of retaining their title.
