    WHAT HAPPENED?

Wydad Casablanca have approved an exceptional leave of absence for head coach Rhulani Mokwena, who cited psychological pressure as the reason for his request.

The 37-year-old coach has been under intense scrutiny since failing to mount a successful title challenge.

His team currently sits third in the Moroccan Botola Pro League, trailing behind the leading pack.

The pressure from fans and media had intensified in recent weeks, with Mokwena appearing visibly burdened.

Despite his efforts, Wydad’s form has dipped, and the club has failed to win in its last five outings.

His leave is set to extend beyond the final league fixture, with a contractual exit expected afterward.

    WHAT THE STATEMENT SAID

“The board of directors of Wydad Athletic Club announces, at the request of first-team coach Rulani Mokwena, that he has been granted exceptional leave of absence extending beyond the team’s final match in the professional league. This is due to the significant psychological pressures he has experienced recently,” read the statement.

“The Wydad Athletic Club management confirms that the contractual termination of coach Rulani Mokwena will be officially completed immediately after the end of the professional league, in compliance with the terms of the contract concluded between the two parties. It also emphasizes that this decision will not entail any financial compensation, as is being circulated, except for the payment of the monthly wages due only.

“Accordingly, the sports director and national coach, Mr. Amine Benhachem, has been assigned to lead the first team during this phase. We sincerely wish him and all the team members success.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mokwena’s departure marks a premature end to his North African journey, as he leaves Wydad before completing a full season.

His exit now places focus on fellow South Africans Cassius Mailula and Thembinkosi Lorch, who joined the club on loan to reignite their careers.

Both players have shown glimpses of promise but struggled to find consistent form under the pressure-filled environment.

The uncertainty around Wydad’s direction may affect their future at the club.

With a coaching transition underway, the club's immediate focus will be stabilizing results and reshaping its vision.
