    WHAT HAPPENED?

Rulani Mokwena’s Wydad Athletic Club played to a goalless draw against Botola Pro leaders RS Berkane on Friday, March 28, at Stade Municipal de Berkane, leaving the hosts firmly in control of the title race.

Berkane, who have lost one game in 23 league matches, remained 15 points ahead of Wydad, who had hoped to close the gap but now face a battle for second place instead.

Mokwena started Cassius Mailula and on-loan attacker Thembinkosi Lorch, with the latter continuing to adapt to Moroccan football, yet Wydad struggled to break down the home side's disciplined defence.

The Moïn Chaabani-led side thought they had a chance to take the lead when awarded a first-half penalty, but VAR overturned the decision, ending their hopes of extending their scoring streak.

While Berkane failed to score for the first time in eight matches, Wydad extended their unbeaten run under Mokwena to seven games, with five wins and two draws showing steady progress.

The result demonstrated Wydad’s defensive resilience against the league leaders, but their inability to convert chances highlighted an area for improvement.

With the title looking out of reach, Mokwena’s men must now focus on finishing strong and securing the highest possible position in the league.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

VAR played a crucial role in their match against Berkane by overturning a penalty call, which was a stark contrast to Wydad's previous game against CODM Meknes, where Mokwena openly criticised the system.

Mokwena, who recently returned to the dugout after a family emergency, has had to manage both expectations and the pressure of maintaining momentum.

His influence has been evident, but Wydad must remain consistent to keep their Caf Champions League qualification hopes alive.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MOKWENA?

With the title race heating up, Mokwena and his side must stay focused on maximising points in their remaining fixtures to keep their continental hopes alive.

Every match presents an opportunity to apply pressure on RS Berkane, and they cannot afford any slip-ups as the season nears its climax. Maintaining consistency will be key, especially with Mokwena back on the sidelines, ensuring his tactical influence drives Wydad forward.

As they prepare for their next challenge, the team knows that each game brings them a step closer to either closing the gap or falling short in their pursuit of glory.
