Relebohile Mofokeng & Arthur Sales, Orlando Pirates vs Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2025Backpagepix

Winners and losers from the Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns MTN8 blockbuster clash! Relebohile Mofokeng goes missing and Themba Zwane adds to Miguel Cardoso's issues as Kamogelo Sebelebele answers Monnapule Saleng questions

Orlando Pirates came from behind to settle for a 1-1 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns in an MTN8 semi-final, first-leg match at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

Kamogelo Sebelebele rescued the Buccaneers with a goal three minutes from time after Masandawana had taken the lead through Teboho Mokoena in the 36th minute.

It is game on for the two traditional giants as they head into the second leg in Thswane next weekend.

But Sundowns enjoy the advantage of an away goal going into that match, which challenges Pirates to show some strong character and defy the toll of a difficult run of form.

    WINNER: Kamogelo Sebelebele

As Pirates appeared headed for a third consecutive defeat, Sebelebele showed up and grabbed the equaliser with three minutes remaining on the clock.

It was a crucial goal that saved the Buccaneers from the jaws of defeat in their own backyard.

What made the afternoon special for former TS Galaxy winger Sebelebele was that it was his debut start for the Soweto giants after two substitute appearances in the PSL and his first goal for Pirates.

Bucs were criticized for not signing a suitable replacement for Monnapule Saleng in the right wing, but Sebelebele has now shown that he is capable of becoming a dependable right winger for the club

    LOSER: Themba Zwane

The Masandawana skipper was stretchered off the pitch following a thigh sprain.

For someone who spent the better part of last season on the sidelines while injury, the latest fitness setback is not good news for coach Miguel Cardoso.

At 36, Zwane is at an age where injuries might take time to heal and it is fingers crossed for Sundowns, hoping that he gets back to full fitness as soon as possible.

With key players, Lucas Ribeiro and Khuliso Mudau, unavailable for selection, Zwane's injury adds to Cardoso's issues.

  • Zuko Mdunyelwa, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2025Backpagepix

    WINNER: Zuko Mdunyelwa

Thanks to the unavailability of Mudau, who is reportedly pushing for a move away from Chloorkop, Mdunyelwa has had his chance come.

He grabbed it and was named the Man of the Match in such a big and high-stakes match.

If he continues with such form, even Thapelo Morena might find it difficult to claim the right-back position.

  • Abdeslam Ouaddou, Orlando PiratesBackpage

    LOSER: Abdeslam Ouaddou

It has been a difficult ride for Ouaddou, who has now guided the Soweto giants to a three-match winless streak, which included two PSL defeats and then Saturday's draw.

Pirates are a pale shadow of that mean machine which won five Cup finals in three seasons under the Moroccan's predecessor, Jose Riveiro.

They appear to have veered off course from that side that has been finishing the league as runners-up to Sundowns in the last three campaigns.

The difficult run endured by the Buccaneers has triggered talk that Ouaddou's days at the club are numbered and could be shown the exit door.

With Pirates staring at the exit from the MTN8, which they have won three times in a row, it does not look good for the former Fulham defender.

  • Tashreeq Matthews, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2025Backpage

    WINNER: Mamelodi Sundowns

The Brazilians return to Tshwane with an advantage of the away goal they scored at Orlando Stadium.

That gives them much hope going into next weekend's second leg at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

It will be their game to lose should they fail to utilise Mokoena's strike to their advantage at home.

  • Relebohile Mofokeng, Orlando Pirates, August 2025Backpage

    LOSER: Relebohile Mofokeng

The departure of Mohau Nkota has left Mofokeng looking like an isolated figure.

For a player who could easily influence games and was crucial for Pirates in the last two seasons, he struggled to impose himself on Saturday.

Even his body language is not convincing and he looks unhappy at the club.
