    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs first assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef has explained why some of the club's new signings were not in the matchday squad that faced Stellenbosch FC.

Flavio Silva, Ethan Chislett, and Nkanyiso Shinga were missing, and the reason why they were not available has been explained.

    WHAT YOUSSEF SAID

“When the new players come back to join us, it will be better; they will give us more solutions. We are waiting for them [for work permits], and we continue to work,” Youssef explained.

“So, for us, we prepare all the team, all of them; they can start the game. We prepare for all situations. And if they are available to play, we are lucky; if they are not available, it’s our job to prepare the next play.”

    WHAT IS MORE

The Amakhosi assistant coach said they stopped celebrating the win over Stellies and quickly focused on their next game.

"The most important thing that we discussed now in the changing room is that we finished today’s game against Stellenbosch, and we start thinking about the next game against Polokwane City," he said.

The most difficult thing for us is always thinking about the second game. As a coach, we have prepared for different playing plans, A, B, C, and D – a lot of plans – because they can get injured in the last training session," the Tunisian added.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

As Youssef led Chiefs in their season-opening game in the absence of head coach Nasreddine Nabi, he was unable to field some of the new players, as he had to rely on the squad that was there last season, largely.

Meanwhile, Thabiso Monyane made his official debut, while Naledi Hlongwane, the club's graduate from the development team, also debuted and led the attacks in the absence of Silva.

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHIEFS?

The 2-0 win over the Maroons should boost the Glamour Boys' morale going into their midweek game against Polokwane City.

Last season, Chiefs finished ninth while Stellies were third, and this means the victory is even more significant for the Soweto giants.

Chiefs will host City on Wednesday.
