Mamelodi Sundowns played Esperance in the first leg of the Caf Champions League quarter-final game staged at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday.

The hosts were dominant but managed just a goal courtesy of Peter Shalulile, to get a narrow win ahead of the second meeting in Tunisia.

The aggregate winner will advance to the semi final of the annual competition.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Masandawana had 80% ball possession as opposed to the Tunisian outfit that wanted to sit back and probably force a goalless draw.

Even when Shalulile scored, Cardoso wanted more explaining why he was seen on the touchline urging his players to get another goal.

However, Williams was seen moments later juggling the ball, showing no sense of urgency whatsoever, despite the coach's clear message.

It was something that did not go down well with Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune who has now called the Bafana Bafana captain to order.

    WHAT KHUNE SAID

“But what I like about the coach, I saw in the second half he was pushing his players to say ‘let’s go get the second goal’ and you see the Bafana Bafana number one juggling the ball; now you have two people, the coach and the captain doing the opposite,” the 37-year-old said during his analysis at on SABC Sport.

“Now, what message are you sending to the players, that no ‘if our captain is relaxed, let us all relax’. But they need to be careful of that going forward," Khune concluded.

    WHAT NEXT?

Sundowns were eliminated by the then Cardoso-led Esperance from the Caf Champions League last season in the semi-final.

They now have an opportunity to avenge the loss but will have to ensure they deliver in Tunisia on Tuesday.

A win or a draw of any kind is the easiest way to see the team get into the last four.

And hopefully we will see the coach and the 'keeper on the same page throughout.
