    WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Kaizer Chiefs forward Junior Khanye believes Mamelodi Sundowns have reached the end of their Caf Champions League road.

Sundowns are set for an epic second-leg duel against Al Ahly in Cairo after the first leg ended in a goalless draw at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

Khanye picked two players to explain how the Egyptian giants are difficult and dangerous, believing they will end Downs' continental campaign.

    WHAT KHANYE SAID

“I have said it before, they [Sundowns] are not going to win the Champions League,” Khanye is quoted by iDiski Times as saying.

“This is the end of the road. They are going away, and the team they are playing against is a different team. The Ahly that played in the group stage and this one are two different teams. Technically, they are something else. You look at number 11 [Nejc Gradisar]; he has something special, but can’t compare to number 22 [Emam Abdelghany] because 22 is something else.

“In front of his home crowd, I’m sure the coach thought he would be cautious, he would give him freedom to play, and he’s going to want him to score. They are going to beat Sundowns away," he concluded.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After elimination from the Nedbank Cup, Sundowns will be keen to avoid another setback in an even bigger competition. This is expected to motivate them to fight to win the continental trophy, which they last lifted in 2016.

Whereas they face an uphill task, they will be eager to fight and eliminate Al Ahly and show the continent that they are also bigwigs and not just mere participants.

The Brazilians have been dominant in the Premier Soccer League and have been pressured to extend that success to the continental stage. They have always come close, but this time around, their dream is to win the second star.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SUNDOWNS?

They will be hosted by Al Ahly on April 25 for the decisive showdown.

Since they are no longer in the cup competition, their calendar is not congested, meaning they will have their focus on PSL in addition to the Champions League if they progress.

Richards Bay will be their next opponent in the league, where they are scheduled to meet on April 30.
