    WHAT HAPPENED?

Zakhele Lepasa, currently with the South African squad for the African Nations Championship (CHAN), was recently released by Orlando Pirates.

The striker departed the Buccaneers after five seasons in the senior team, having risen through the club’s development ranks. Although he saw limited game time last season, interest in his services remains strong, with Durban City keen to secure his signature.

    WHAT KADODIA SAID?

"Yes, we are interested in Zakhele Lepasa. He is a very good striker who could really help us as a team. We have spoken to his agent, and we are waiting for him to come back to us, and then we will take it from there. But seriously, we are interested in him and he has worked with coach Gavin Hunt before and he knows him very well," Kadodia told Soccer Laduma.

"I understand there are other clubs who are also interested in Zakhele Lepasa, and you know in football it's all about money and who offers you better money, and we may lose out on him because of that, but we are looking at having him in the team if we can," he concluded.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After being promoted to the senior team in 2018, Lepasa was loaned to TS Galaxy to gain regular playing time. He was instrumental in Galaxy’s historic 2019 Nedbank Cup win over Kaizer Chiefs, scoring the decisive goal in their 1-0 victory.

Following his success at Galaxy, Lepasa returned to Pirates to compete for a spot in the attack but was loaned out again in January 2023 for six months to SuperSport United (now Siwelele FC).

Injuries have hampered the talented forward throughout his time with the Soweto giants, limiting his impact on the field.

He has also been linked with Kaizer Chiefs in the past.

    WHAT’S NEXT FOR LEPASA?

The 28-year-old will be eager to leave his mark in national colours as South Africa take on Algeria, Guinea, Niger and Uganda in pursuit of the CHAN title.

Should he get his chance on the pitch, Lepasa will be determined to seize the moment, proving he still has plenty to offer and earning himself a fresh start in the PSL next season.
