    WHAT HAPPENED?

Patrick Maswanganyi scored his second goal in Bafana Bafana colours during Tuesday's 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Sudan.

On an evening he made his first start for the national team in these qualifiers, the Orlando Pirates star made a follow-up to his maiden goal for South Africa against Uganada last Friday.

Now in front of a vociferous home crowd at Cape Town Stadium, Maswanganyi was alert to pounce on a howler by Sudan goalkeeper Majak Mawith.

Teboho Mokoena and Iqraam Rayners netted the other goals as Bafana secured a 3-0 win over the Bright Stars as South Africa finished at the top of Group K standings.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Maswanganyi has now cemented his international career after Tuesday's goal.

Against Uganda, he raised his hand to start against South Sudan and he rewarded Broos' trust in him.

If he continues with such performances for the national team, he can be considered as a long-term replacement for Themba Zane.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MASWANGANYI?

Bafana will be back for competitive football after four months when they resume the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

Broos' men are second in Group C and need some strong character from players to qualify for the World Cup and Maswanganyi will be hoping the coach will still have trust in him.
