Bafana Bafana international Percy Tau’s team, Al Ahly, defeated Ceramica Cleopatra 5-2 in the Egyptian Premier League opener on Saturday.

This was the second meeting between the two sides in just a month, with Tau’s Al Ahly emerging victorious both times over compatriot Fagrie Lakay.

Tau came on as a substitute for the last ten minutes, while Lakay played the full match.

Nicknamed Lion of Judah, Tau has now played just two of Al Ahly's last three matches - including two late substitute appearances and a combined 32 minutes.

The 30-year-old forward is included in the preliminary Bafana Bafana squad for the upcoming 2025 Afcon qualifiers, and he hopes to secure a place in the final 23-man squad.

Elias Mokwana, another South African plying his trade in North Africa, scored his first goal for Esperance.

This achievement is a significant confidence boost ahead of the international break.

With the upcoming qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan, Hugo Broos will be encouraged by Mokwana’s recent form and hopes he can bring that scoring touch to the national team.

Tau’s immediate focus is to secure a consistent starting spot at Al Ahly and reclaim his position in the Bafana Bafana lineup.
