    WHAT HAPPENED?

    Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen William jetted off to France on Saturday to attend the 2024 Ballon d'Or awards. 

    Williams received an international nod in September after being nominated for the Yachine Trophy at this year's Ballon d’Or awards. 

    The 32-year-old star got recognition following impressive performances for both the national team and the Tshwane giants.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    Williams is nominated for the world's best goalkeeper gong alongside the likes of Emiliano Martínez of Argentina and Spain's Unai Simon amongst other best shot-stoppers. 

    The Gqeberha-born stopper had a great 2023/24 season with Sundowns - having helped the team win the Premier Soccer League and the inaugural African Football League. 

    He also captained the Hugo Broos-led team to finish in third place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Ivory Coast earlier this year.

    WHAT NEXT?

    Apart from the Ballon d’Or awards, the former Williams will be eying to be a winner in the Caf awards in December. 

    He has been nominated for Interclub Player of the Year, Player of the Year, and Goalkeeper of the Year after having an exceptional year.
