    WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Royal AM owner Shauwn ‘MaMkhize’ Mkhize has been unveiled as the president of Eswatini's Mbabane Highlanders.

Upon being unveiled as the club's top official, the club rebranded, and the gold colours that were associated with Royal AM were added to Highlanders.

MaMkhize went on to make a bold promise to the club's fans, saying her sole dream is to elevate the outfit.

    WHAT MKHIZE SAID

“Mbabane Highlanders is a symbol of pride, strength and tradition. And today marks a new chapter, not a takeover but a partnership. A merging of histories between Eswatini and South Africa, rooted in shared ambition and excellence," MaMkhize said during the ceremony held on Saturday.

“To the patrons, my heartfelt thanks for your trust. To the fans, you are the soul of this club. Together, we will raise the standard, grow our talent and bring this club the success it deserves. My promise is simple: I will lead with integrity, vision and heart. We’re not here to participate; we’re here to elevate," she added.

    “Thank you for welcome."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Apart from rebranding in terms of colours, MaMkhize added her son's, Andile Mpisane's, abbreviation to the club's name that now extends to Mbabane Highlanders AM Football Club.

The South African flamboyant businesswoman has now got an avenue to engage on matters of soccer since the Premier Soccer League expelled her Royal AM.

The club suffered an unwanted fate when the PSL Board of Governors (BoG) terminated its membership of the league.

This decision was preceded by the club's failure to honour its duties for a period of 10 months as the businesswoman battled with South African Revenue Service (SARS) curatorship over a tax debt of around R40 million.

Eventually, Royal AM's expulsion saw the league finish with 15 teams last season.

    WHAT NEXT FOR HIGHLANDERS FC?

MaMkhize has joined the country's most successful club; Highlanders are 13-time Premier League champions, nine-time Swazi Cup winners and have won the Swazi Charity Cup on five occasions.

Their success story does not end there; they have lifted the Swazi Trade Fair Cup once and the Bible Cup twice.

MaMkhize's entry will be closely watched to see whether she will help the club return to its glory days. Although they are the most successful club in the country, Highlanders FC last won the Premier League title in 2001.
