The Gunners were hoping to put on a show for the home support at a sold-out Emirates Stadium. But Spurs were never going to make life easy for the hosts and held their own across 45 goalless minutes in the first half.

Arsenal, though, required less than four minutes to force a breakthrough after the restart. They boast plenty of creativity and goal threat in the attacking third, with it difficult to contain them when everything clicks into place.

That was the case when Scottish playmaker Kim Little clipped a clever pass into the path of Mead. The Gunners winger took a brilliant first touch, which took her towards goal, before seeing the ball squirm loose into the path of fellow Lionesses Russo – who made no mistake when crashing into the top corner from five yards out.

Arsenal remain in the WSL title hunt this season, with Jonas Eidevall’s side within sight of the summit, and will continue to look to the likes of Mead and Russo for inspiration as they also ready themselves for a League Cup semi-final date with Aston Villa.
