  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Joseph Setlhodi has responded and encouraged the current Amakhosi shot stopper, Brandon Petersen, who has equalled his club league record.

Petersen has managed five straight clean sheets, meaning Setlhodi's record, which has been there for 46 years, has been equalled.

Banks, as the retired goalkeeper is known, is glad that it is Petersen who equalled the record that stood for over four decades.

    WHAT SETLHODI SAID

"It's a good thing that the record has been broken. It makes me happy to see that we still have achievers out there. This shows there is improvement in that department," Setlhodi said, as quoted by KickOff.

"It's special that my record has been broken by someone who started off very slow and weak. He can become a good goalkeeper if he starts believing that he is a Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper – then he will truly excel in that role. He must carry himself like a Kaizer Chiefs keeper should."

    WHAT IS MORE

However, Setlhodi believes the Chiefs goalkeeper still needs to prove himself and has pointed out what Petersen must do in order to become even better.

"No club has ever become successful without a good goalkeeper. I know at Chiefs they have told Petersen about my record," he added.

"But for Petersen, he still has to prove himself. A Chiefs goalkeeper leads the team. He must marshal the squad effectively. He needs to guide the team in the right direction."

"Most importantly, he must show consistency. He has to demonstrate that he is not willing to concede goals."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The goalkeeper department was under immense scrutiny last season, especially with some poor performances by Bruce Bvuma.

However, this season, Petersen has been quite impervious, as he has not conceded in five consecutive games. He has managed this achievement even after keeping at bay Mamelodi Sundowns, a club that is known to have some of the most lethal attacking units in the league.

His solidity has been pivotal in Chiefs' campaign so far, as the Soweto giants remain unbeaten and second on the log.

    WHAT NEXT FOR PETERSEN?

The goalkeeper will be up against another tough challenge after the FIFA international break.

Amakhosi are set to welcome Sekhukhune United on September 17, who are top of the table courtesy of a superior goal difference.

Babina Noko have scored in all of their five league games, meaning Petersen will be up against a side that can easily breach his clean sheet run.
