    WHAT HAPPENED?

Royal AM have encountered financial difficulties since late 2024 with their controversial owner Shauwn Mkhize reportedly indebted to the South African Revenue Service over R40 million.

The financial crisis at the KwaZulu-Natal club compelled the PSL to postpone Thwihli Thwahla's competitive matches, with the team last taking to the field on December 29, 2024.

Recent reports suggest that the Sars curator is engaged in finalizing an agreement with a prospective buyer for Royal AM as they aim for the club to be sold or liquidated.

    WHAT WAS SAID

"On Monday, the curator will submit in court that Royal AM has to be sold, and if they don’t find a buyer, they will liquidate the club," a source told Ilanga, as quoted by Sportswire

"Furthermore, the curator will recommend that the PSL not expel Royal AM immediately, but rather wait until a buyer is found. We have found a buyer, and they had a meeting on Friday.

"Shauwn is fighting back to reclaim the club and prevent liquidation or a sale. She is determined to save the club she bought for her son, Andile Mpisane."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Reports emerged this week indicating that the PSL has ceased granting Royal AM its monthly funding, which could further suggest that the club's future is bleak.

Nevertheless, the PSL, led by Dr. Irvin Khoza, has been advised to refrain from expelling the Pietermaritzburg team immediately to give the Sars curator time to find a buyer for the club.

Amid this situation, Bloemfontein Celtic, a club purchased by Mkhize and renamed Royal AM in 2021, have opted out of competing in the ABC Motsepe League, with reports suggesting the team's owners may acquire Thwihli Thwahla's PSL status.

    WHAT NEXT?

With Mkhize fighting to retain her team in the PSL, it remains uncertain whether she will be victorious or the curator will ultimately complete the sale of the club.

The PSL is expected to make an announcement regarding Royal AM in the near future.
