    WHAT HAPPENED?

Tashreeq Matthews’ return to South African football has been nothing short of a success.

Speaking to the media, the Hanover Park-born winger admitted it wasn’t an easy decision to leave Europe, especially after a standout season abroad.

However, joining Mamelodi Sundowns proved to be the right move, as he clinched his first-ever league title within just a few months of arriving.

Matthews reflected on how he’s managed to adapt quickly, crediting the club's winning culture and strong support structure.

He also shared how he uses his small frame to his advantage, saying it helps him move quicker and stay elusive.

The 23-year-old emphasised how honoured he feels to be part of what he calls the best team in the country.

His hunger for more silverware is evident as he eyes continental glory next.

Matthews' dream season could get even better with two more major titles still up for grabs.

    WHAT MATTHEWS SAID

“Coming back was a difficult decision but at the end of the day, coming back to the best team in South Africa and winning trophies, and being in the Champions League final says a lot,” Matthews said as reported by iDiski Times.

“Winning trophies in Europe? I didn’t win besides individual awards, but now I’m winning together with a team.

“If you look at it, not just me, there’s many footballers who have my structure, it just depends on how you use your body, of course sometimes, it comes to a disadvantage but if you’re in possession of the ball you have an advantage, if you know how to use your body,” he explained.

“Growing up as a footballer, I played many different positions. I’m comfortable in attack, going forward, anywhere in the attack basically.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

With 21 league appearances and five goals to his name, Matthews has become a valuable asset for Sundowns in his full campaign.

The club's journey to the CAF Champions League final now gives him the chance to make history once again.

For the player, the ultimate prize would be a clash against his former club Borussia Dortmund at the FIFA Club World Cup.

That prospect adds an emotional layer to an already thrilling season.

For Sundowns, having a player like Matthews only strengthens their depth as they chase continental and global glory.
