    WHAT HAPPENED?

On Thursday, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) conducted the highly anticipated quarter-final draw for the Confederation Cup at a grand event in Doha, Qatar.

First-time participants Stellenbosch FC, who impressively advanced as runners-up in Group B, have been handed a tough test against Egyptian giants Zamalek SC in the last eight of the competition.

Stellies, who played all their group-stage matches away from home using Loftus Versfeld and Moses Mabhida Stadium due to Caf stadium regulations, will be looking to continue their dream run on the continental stage.

The exact times, and venues for the quarter-final fixtures will be announced in due course, as Stellenbosch prepares for one of the biggest matches in their history against the five-time CAF Champions League winners and Confederations defending champions.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Steve Barker and his side will be eager to make history by going deep into the competition, following in the footsteps of Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United, who both reached the final in previous years. SuperSport fell short against TP Mazembe in 2017, while Pirates finished as runners-up twice—losing to Étoile du Sahel in 2015 and RS Berkane in 2022.

Stellenbosch has already exceeded expectations by reaching this stage, proving their ability to compete on the continental stage.

Their disciplined defensive setup and counter-attacking style could make them a tough opponent for Zamalek. A strong showing in the quarter-finals will not only enhance their reputation but also boost South African football’s presence in Caf competitions.

    WHAT NEXT FOR STELLIES?

Stellenbosch will now shift their focus back to domestic action as they prepare to face Richards Bay on Friday, February 23, at home in the Cape Winelands.

Their recent league form has been inconsistent, with two wins, two losses, and a draw in their last five matches.

Currently sitting in seventh place, they will be eager to secure maximum points and strengthen their position in the top half of the league. Richards Bay, fighting to avoid relegation, will not be an easy opponent, making this a crucial fixture for both sides.

A victory will provide Stellenbosch with much-needed momentum ahead of their Caf Confederation Cup quarter-final showdown.
