The former Uganda international Walusimbi <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-ke/news/breaking-kaizer-chiefs-complete-signing-of-godfrey-walusimbi-from-gor-mahia/1xo0gwcv5u9vf1q5652p2l1pum" target="_blank">signed for Chiefs in August 2018</a> after a five-year stint with Kenyan giants Gor Mahia.But within five months of his arrival, Amakhosi asked the then out-of-favour left-back to join Chippa United on loan to pave the way for goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi to join, but Walusimbi refused and was eventually released.

WHAT HAPPENED

The exit of Giovanni Solinas and the appointment of Ernst Middendorp spelled doom for the now 34-year-old's stint at Naturena.First-choice keeper Itumeleng Khune was injured and Virgil Vries failed to step up which created a crisis in the goalkeeping department. The new coach decided to sacrifice <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-ke/news/kaizer-chiefs-release-godfrey-walusimbi-after-signing-reeve-frosler-and-daniel-akpeyi/arfsz4fpsmjo177vyvwnk9j19" target="_blank">Walusimbi since the club had reached the foreign quota, to pave the way for Nigerian Akpeyi</a>. He ended up making 14 appearances across all competitions before returning to his Ugandan homeland.Walusimbi has now opened up on his experiences playing in the South African top tier.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

"South Africans are not so welcoming people. I think you remember the xenophobia cases where they were killing people," Walusimbi told <a href="https://nation.africa/kenya/sports/football/godfrey-walusimbi-how-xenophobia-killed-my-psl-dream-4443264" target="_blank">Nation Sports</a>"In the football industry, it's not shown that much. At least it's hidden but it tortures many foreign players."The psychological and little bit of technical aspects make it difficult to play in South Africa. Technically, I am not talking about things like controlling or dribbling the ball. "They have their style of play whereby they like doing tricks on the pitch so if you are not used to it, they get mad at you."

WHAT WALUSIMBI SAID

Even after the exit of Walusimbi, Amakhosi have failed to command dominance in the PSL as they used to.Since the 2014/15 season - when they last won silverware, the Soweto Giants have been coached by nine different tacticians, with the tenth on the way in January 2024.While Walusimbi has retired from playing and now runs Waza Soccer Elite Academy, Chiefs are still chasing players and coaches to help them break their lengthy trophy drought.
