    WHAT HAPPENED?

Twenty-year-old Olwethu Makhanya has had a solid start to the season under new coach Bradley Carnell, playing four full 90-minute matches so far.

He did receive a red card in their clash against St. Louis City, though his team still managed to secure the win.

After serving his suspension, Makhanya returned to face none other than Lionel Messi, the reigning FIFA World Cup champion.

Despite losing the match, the young South African held his own and didn’t back down.

A feisty moment between him and the Argentine icon caught the attention of fans and media alike.

Makhanya has since spoken out about the exchange, sharing what actually went down on the pitch.

It was a defining moment that showcased his fearless mentality and growing confidence on the big stage.

    WHAT MAKHANYA SAID

"I mean, obviously, he was, like, backing off towards me and he wasn't aware of that", said Makhanya on The One Team We Agree On Podcast.

"So I was just, like, trying to make sure he doesn't step on me. So I just, you know, pushed him a little bit.

"I guess he didn't like that. And then he started with the elbow and everything. And the linesman was just there, but, you know, he didn't say anything.

"So, yeah, that's how it went down."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Bradley Carnell has made a positive start to the season with Philadelphia Union as a coach, registering four wins and two losses. His side is currently just one point behind Inter Miami and holds a game in hand.

Makhanya has thrived under Carnell’s guidance, using the opportunity to settle into the MLS and grow as a player.

Having a fellow South African on the touchline has given him added belief and motivation.

His performances could soon put him on Hugo Broos’ radar for a potential Bafana Bafana call-up.

    WHAT NEXT FOR UNION?

Next up, Philadelphia Union hosts Orlando City in a crucial home fixture.

A win will help them keep pressure on Messi’s Inter Miami side.

Makhanya will be eager to continue his momentum and cement his spot in the starting XI.
