Pirates trio send Bafana to the World Cup

Bafana Bafana burst out of the blocks on Tuesday evening, as Thalente Mbatha marked his return to the starting lineup with a thunderous strike from outside the box. Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari got a hand to it, but the Rwandan couldn’t keep it out. South Africa kept the pressure high, and nearly doubled their lead before the 20-minute mark when Teboho Mokoena rose to meet Oswin Appollis’ corner, only to glance his header wide.

The second goal came just minutes later. Evidence Makgopa held up play brilliantly before teeing up his Orlando Pirates teammate Appollis, who rifled home a superb first-time finish to send the crowd into a frenzy.

An injury to the lively Thapelo Morena in the 33rd minute forced Broos into an early change, with Mohau Nkota stepping in after playing just one half against Zimbabwe. Rwanda struggled to respond, unable to break through South Africa’s shape or tempo. The hosts stayed sharp and composed and went into the halftime break 2-0 ahead.

The second half picked up right where the first left off, with South Africa pressing relentlessly in search of a third. Their reward came in the 72nd minute when Makgopa rose highest to nod home from an Appollis corner, capping off a dominant display.

With a 3-0 cushion, Bafana Bafana played with freedom and confidence as the final whistle eventually blew, confirming Broos’ side heading to the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Group C leaders. Out in Uyo, Nigeria had delivered the favour South Africa needed, sweeping Benin aside 4-0 thanks to a Victor Osimhen hat trick and a goal from Frank Onyeka, as the Super Eagles now head into a knockout playoff to fight for their own ticket to the global showpiece.

    The MVP

Appollis was a standout performer and deservedly earned the MVP honours for his electric pace, sharp decision-making and clinical finishing. His ability to stretch Rwanda’s defence and create space was pivotal throughout the match.

His sublime first-time finish that doubled South Africa’s lead was a joy to watch.

    The big loser

Rwanda were the clear loser on the day, offering little resistance and failing to trouble South Africa’s defence. The visitors spent most of the match pinned in their own half, unable to string together meaningful attacks or apply pressure.

Ronwen Williams had a quiet outing between the sticks, barely called into action as Bafana Bafana controlled proceedings from start to finish.
