    WHAT HAPPENED?

In a highly anticipated draw held in Cairo on Thursday, February 13, 2025, South Africa learned their fate for the upcoming U20 AFCON in Ivory Coast. Amajita have been placed in a tough Group B alongside powerhouses Egypt, Nigeria, and Morocco. The tournament, set to take place from April 26 to May 18, will see the top four nations secure a spot at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile. South Africa faces a daunting challenge, as all three of their group opponents have previously lifted the trophy—Morocco (1997), Egypt (1981, 1991, 2003, 2013), and Nigeria, the most decorated team in the competition’s history with seven titles (1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 2005, 2011, 2015).

    WHAT IS NEXT FOR MDAKA

With key players from clubs like Cape Town City and Kaizer Chiefs included in the preliminary squad, it remains to be seen if Psl teams will release them, as the tournament falls outside the Fifa calendar. Coach Raymond Mdaka will soon announce his final squad, which will aim to compete against some of Africa’s most decorated youth teams.

The likes of Mfundo Vilakazi, Shandre Campbell, and Luphumlo Sifuma are expected to play a key role in the team’s campaign. With tough competition ahead, Amajita will need to be at their best to secure a top-four finish and qualify for the Fifa U20 World Cup in Chile.
