    WHAT WILLIAMS SAID

"I know this win will inspire millions of South Africans to believe in themselves, push boundaries, and never forget your dreams are valid. This is a wonderful moment for me, thanks to Caf for the recognition and I will forever be grateful to you," Williams said, as quoted by Sowetan

"I thank my support staff, family [parents, brother and sister, my partner and my children] for being there for me throughout my career. I could not have done this alone.

"Thanks to all the players, coaches, and technical staff that have been with me throughout my career. I dedicate this award [to] all the goalkeeper coaches I have worked with throughout my career since I was a little boy," he added.

"I thank Maurice Camelio, Grant Johnson, Deshi Bhaktawer, Andre Arendse, William Shongwe, Lucky Shiburi, Lee Baxter, Wendell Robinson, and the legendary Kenney Mweene. I am forever indebted to you and thank you for moulding me into the goalkeeper I am today."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Williams has experienced an incredible 2024 calendar year, having aided Hugo Broos' Bafana in securing third place at the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Ivory Coast earlier in the year.

He played a significant role in helping Sundowns win the 2023/24 Premier Soccer League title and reach the Nedbank Cup and Carling Knockout Cup finals this year, despite falling short in both competitions.

His outstanding performances garnered global recognition after he was nominated for the Yachine Trophy at the 2024 Ballon d'Or Awards, where he finished in ninth place.

    WHAT NEXT FOR WILLIAMS?

Williams' success could potentially draw interest from major European clubs, but his age may pose a challenge as he turns 33 next month.

Ronwen will need to quickly set aside his personal accolades, as his leadership abilities will be required when Sundowns face a strong Stellenbosch FC in a PSL match on Wednesday.

The two clubs, who are both competing in the Caf Champions League and Caf Confederation Cup, respectively, will vie for the three points at the DHL Stadium.
