    WHAT HAPPENED?

Orlando Pirates beat Al Ahly 2-1 in their final Caf Champions League Group C game at Cairo International Stadium on Saturday.

It was the Buccaneers' second victory away in North Africa in this group campaign after also beating CR Belouizdad in Algeria.

Forward Relebohile Mofokeng, who was on target on Saturday, believes their exploits have heightened expectations on them.

  • WHAT MOFOKENG SAID

“Yes we always expect to win, obviously we always want to win, so yeah, I think we worked hard for the win, they are a very good team and managed to play [well] against us,” Mofokeng said on SABC Sport.

“It was a very good game, I just thank God that we managed to win. I’m very happy to win here in Cairo, they are a very challenging team here in Cairo.

“I think we managed to get the three points, we’re on top of the table and thankful [for winning the group].”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Interestingly, Pirates qualified for the quarter-finals before the Al Ahly game in what seemed like a statement of intent.

Qualifying for the knockouts before the conclusion of the group stage is a trend known for Mamelodi Sundowns, who now reach the final pool game without booking a last-eight spot.

With expectations high on them, it is now to be seen if the Buccaneers will be able to be impressive in the quarter-finals.

    WHAT NEXT FOR PIRATES?

The Buccaneers now switch attention to the Premier Soccer League as they visit Royal AM at Harry Gwala Stadium.

They are chasing Mamelodi Sundowns in the PSL title race and the Brazilians lead them by three points.
