    WHAT HAPPENED?

Former St Louis City FC coach Bradley Carnell has revealed Kaizer Chiefs star Njabulo Blom was a long-time target of his.

Carnell signed Blom at St Louis City, but the former Bafana Bafana defender says he had wanted the utility star when he was still at New York Red Bulls.

    WHAT CARNELL SAID

“I’ve always looked at Njabulo Blom not just because it’s Kaizer Chiefs,” Carnell told FARPost.

“Because I like his values as a player and the type of profile I was looking for as a midfielder.”

Carnell credits Blom for “good instincts and behaviour” and adds, “You don’t have to tell him what to do.”

“He has those behaviours to play the way I like to play. It was a no-brainer,” the ex-Chiefs defender continued.

“Even when I was at Red Bull, it was pretty funny; when I was looking at my old laptop, I found some scouting reports that I had made of Njabulo while I was working at Red Bull.

“I was even looking at Njabulo from a New York Red Bull perspective back then. He’s always been a name and a player that I was keen on. I was really happy to get him in the building here [at St Louis City SC].”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Carnell has managed to play six of Chiefs' seven games in all competitions this season and has started three of those.

He is playing in an Amakhosi midfield that has the likes of Yusuf Maart, Samkelo Zwane, Sibongiseni Mthethwa and Edson Castillo who is currently injured.

Enjoying more game time will help him stay match-fit and boost his chances of returning to the Bafana Bafana squad.

    WHAT NEXT FOR BLOM?

It remains to be seen if St Louis City will take Blom back after this loan stint or sell him.

The utility star would want to be at a club where he enjoys more game time and make a return to the Bafana Bafana set-up.
