BackpagepixIn the dramatic conclusion to the 2019/20 season, Polokwane City midfielder Manuel Kambala left an indelible mark on South African football history. Then playing for Baroka FC, Kambala's crucial goal on the final day of the campaign denied Kaizer Chiefs the league title.
The result saw Chiefs relinquish their top position to eventual champions Mamelodi Sundowns, crushing the dreams of Amakhosi fans. Years later, Kambala opens up about the personal fallout of that momentous goal.
The Mozambique international reflects on the tension and anger directed at him from Chiefs supporters. He shares how the incident impacted his life off the field and shaped his experiences as a professional footballer.
Backpagepix"Hey, the Chiefs fans are very angry with me for scoring that goal (laughing). On social media, some were insulting me like this. Little did I know that my scoring in that game would cause so much anger," said Kambala on Isolezwe.
"I used to be afraid to even go to the mall (mall), especially in Johannesburg, since I have friends and relatives there for fear that some Chiefs fans might hurt me if they see my face.
"Things like that happen in football because some fans take things to heart because they love football and their teams, while others spend a lot of money betting. Although it will take time for the Chiefs fans to forget me, but I do not believe that they still hold a grudge against me, health continues."
Kambala (33), who is in his second season at Polokwane, having joined last season from Magesi FC, believes that his team can once again be a challenge for teams in the title race. In the last six games of the season, they will play against Orlando Pirates who are currently in contention for the title of the PSL title.
"It is possible that we will reopen the issue. He remembered that Pirates beat us 3-0 in the first round and we will play against them in April. By then there will be a few games left in the season, so we are still in debt. Apart from Pirates, there are other teams that I believe we will be competing with to stay in the Top 3, so we will decide the matter," continued Kambala.
