Predicting Mamelodi Sundowns' XI to face Stellenbosch FC - Will Miguel Cardoso hand Peter Shalulile chance to break the PSL goals record of Kaizer Chiefs legend?

Mamelodi Sundowns will be looking to return to winning ways in the Premier Soccer League when they visit Athlone Stadium for a clash against Stellenbosch.

Sundowns are desperate for a victory that will not only see them get back to winning ways but also ease pressure on their shoulders at this early stage of the season.

After a semi-final elimination in the MTN8 by Orlando Pirates, Downs faced Kaizer Chiefs in a midweek league clash and picked just a point from a goalless draw that ended Amakhosi's winning run.

Against Amakhosi, coach Miguel Cardoso rang changes, and even though the players did not give him a victory, at least they picked up one more point of the season.

Ahead of the Saturday game, GOAL takes a look at how Cardoso could line up his team to face Stellies.

  • Ronwen Williams, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2025Backpage

    GOALKEEPER: Ronwen Williams

He made key saves that kept his team in the game.

His saves against Chiefs were top-level actions and just proved why the Bafana custodian is one of the best goalkeepers in the country.

  • Thapelo Morena, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2025Backpage

    RIGHT-BACK: Thapelo Morena

One of the positions that saw a change in personnel as Cardoso benched Zuko Mdunyelwa and lined up Thapelo Morena.

  • Fawaaz Basadien, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2025Backpage

    LEFT-BACK: Fawaaz Basadien

Against Chiefs, the new signing started ahead of Divine Lunga and Aubrey Modiba, and this scenario is expected to play out again for the Stellenbosch game.

  • Malibongwe Khoza, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2025Backpage

    CENTRE-BACK: Malibongwe Khoza

One of the players who benefited from the changes made as he was lined up at the heart of defence, taking the place of Grant Kekana, who was not in the matchday squad.

  • Keanu Cupido, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2025Backpage

    CENTRE-BACK: Keanu Cupido

Teamed up with Khoza and produced a clean sheet against a Chiefs side that had scored in their last three games.

  • Teboho Mokoena, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2025Backpage

    CENTRAL MIDFIELDER: Teboho Mokoena

Kept his starting XI slot but played for 76 minutes before he was replaced by Bathusi Aubaas.

Mokoena, given his experience, is certainly going to start as Downs hunt for the crucial points against the Maroons.

  • Marcelo Allende, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2025Backpage

    CENTRAL MIDFIELDER: Marcelo Allende

A midfield powerhouse for the Brazilians who is always a soldier ready for deployment.

His chemistry with Mokoena has made their partnership solid and one that the team always relies on.

  • Jayden Adams, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2025Backpage

    ATTACKING MIDFIELDER: Jayden Adams

As Cardoso rang changes, Adams was not affected, and should he play against Stellies, he needs to be careful to avoid another yellow card.

Against Chiefs, he was booked in the 87th minute.

  • Arthur Sales, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2025Backpage

    RIGHT ATTACKER: Arthur Sales

With Lucas Ribeiro unavailable, Sales has been the fallback plan for Cardoso and has always tried his best to fill the void left.

  • Tashreeq Matthews, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2025Backpage

    LEFT ATTACKER: Tashreeq Matthews

One of the consistent figures in Sundowns' line-up, and this points to the fact that the technical bench has trust in him.

  • Iqraam Rayners, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2025Backpage

    CENTRE-FORWARD: Iqraam Rayners

He is guilty of missing a number of chances, but Cardoso trusted him ahead of Peter Shalulile in the last two games against Soweto giants.

Given that Cardoso will be desperate for a win, he will still task the former SuperSport United striker with the goal-hunting expedition against Stellies.

Should the coach decide to change and field Shalulile, that will be a chance for the Namibian to score and become PSL's all-time top scorer.
