'Blood on your hands!' - Plymouth fans vent fury at Wayne Rooney & decision to give him their manager's job as Pilgrims on brink of Championship relegation despite impressive win at Preston

Plymouth are at risk of going down from the English second-tier despite registering a 2-1 win over Preston on Saturday. Simultaneously, Luton Town edged out Coventry 1-0 and are now three points above the Pilgrims in the 21st position. If the Hatters get at least one point from their final match against West Brom, Plymouth will get relegated even if they beat Leeds United.

As the club are on the brink of relegation, fans blasted former coach Wayne Rooney on social media as they blamed the Manchester United legend for their miseries.

An X handle named G-Payne wrote: "Preston (A) been in Blackpool for the weekend, can’t bring myself to go to the game now. On the train back to Blackpool. Hope Hallett is happy with Rooney, clown."

MrBlueSky wrote: "Feel sorry for Plymouth, relegated today after being mid table in form since sacking Rooney, yet he’s at Wembley today as a pundit without a care in the world."

A fan with the handle GM shared an explosive rant as the post read: "You have blood on your hands Simon Hallett. F*cking Wayne Rooney? The worst decision I’ve seen in 30 years of following this club. Utter c*nt."

Neil wrote: "Well Birmingham City fans were right from the start when we appointed Rooney a few fans didn’t want to believe it but they were right all along it should of never of happened and Rooney should had gone a month or so before."

Garry Cottier blamed Plymouth management for Rooney's appointment as he wrote: "Every time Argyle seem to win all the teams around them seem to win too. Deserved relegation at the end of the day and the owners have only got themselves to blame. Appointing Rooney was a disastrous decision. If Muslic had been there from the start, would've stayed up."

Chris Webb wrote: "Miracle for Muslic to take it to the penultimate game to be honest after the Foster and Rooney shambles. Feels like the most avoidable relegation in our history. Summer clear out and rebuild. Argyle til we die."

Despite having left the job four months ago, Rooney has not escaped the scrutiny surrounding Plymouth’s rapid descent toward relegation. The former England and United striker, who took the reins last May, endured a turbulent stint at the club. During his 23-game spell, he registered just four league wins while suffering 13 defeats — a stretch that has left lasting damage on the club’s campaign.

Plymouth will aim to end their campaign on a high as they take on Leeds United in their final match of the season on May 3.
