    WHAT HAPPENED

Caf Champions League champions Al Ahly and Bafana Bafana's star Percy Tau were unlucky on Monday night as they succumbed to Brazilian outfit Fluminense in the Fifa Club World Cup semi-final.

Tau played the whole game for the Red Devils but he was not influential enough to tilt the tie into his side's advantage as they lost 2-0 at King Abdullah Sports City in Saudi Arabia.

The Brazilian outfit's goal came through in the 71st minute countersy of a Arias Jhon penalty as he beat Al Ahly skipper Mohammed El Shenawy.

The veteran goalminder was beaten once again in the 90th minute as John Kennedy put the cherry on top to take his side to the final.

    WINNER

Former Real Madrid star Marcelo now stands a chance to win a fifth Fifa Club World Cup gold medal after winning it in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018 in an era where Los Blancos were unstoppable under former France national team captain Zinedine Zidane.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Al Ahly have never gone further than the semi-finals of this competition and their best performance was finishing with the bronze medal on three occasions.

They finished third in 2006, in 2020 under Pitso Mosimane and in 2021 where they trashed Saudi Arabia side Al Hilal 4-0. They will have another chance to finish in the top three.

    WHAT'S NEXT?

European champions and English heavyweights Manchester City will battle out with Urawa Reds on Tuesday evening for a place in the final where they will take on the Brazilians outfit.

This is City's first shot at the Fifa Club World Cup title as they look to join England rivals Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool who have all claimed the title.
