Pep Guardiola aims 'nobody cares' dig at Liverpool after their Carabao Cup triumph as Man City boss quotes Sir Alex Ferguson in savage assessment of wild Wembley celebrations

The Manchester City boss aimed a veiled dig at Jurgen Klopp and his Liverpool side after they triumphed over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday. Guardiola claimed that he used to consider the tournament as a minor trophy as he appeared to try and belittle the Reds' achievement at Wembley.

Speaking at a press conference, Guardiola said: "I remember when I arrived, Brian Kidd told me, 'The Carabao Cup, don't pay attention, play the young players, nobody cares'.

"Sir Alex Ferguson was always, 'It doesn't matter'. I don't know what happened in these last years, looks like the final of a different competition. It's the truth!"

Since Guardiola's arrival in England in 2016, Manchester City have won the Carabao Cup on four occasions. During the same, Liverpool have managed to win it twice. This year's triumph, though, was special for the club for two reasons. First, despite the absence of several first-team players due to injuries, a rookie Liverpool side managed to beat a full-strength Chelsea. Secondly, Klopp has announced he's stepping down from his role as manager in the summer, so Liverpool will aim to win as many trophies as possible to make his farewell memorable.

The Cityzens will next take on Luton Town in the FA Cup on Tuesday before shifting focus to the Premier League, where they are set to face rivals Manchester United on Sunday. Liverpool, meanwhile, will face Southampton in the FA Cup before getting back to league action against Nottingham Forest.
