Patrick Maswanganyi brace sinks Richards Bay to fire Orlando Pirates into Nedbank Cup Last-16 ahead of Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs

After 22 minutes of play, Patrick Maswanganyi blasted into the back of the net from the edge of the box a set up by Relebohile Mofokeng to place Orlando Pirates on the winning path.

Maswanganyi was back again four minutes later and this time finished another Mofokeng supply from close range.

Richards Bay attempted to come back when Yanela Mbuthuma reduced arrears after pouncing on a spill by Pirates goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi two minutes after the restart.

Tshegofatso Mabasa then dashed the hosts' hopes of a comeback when he scored Pirates' third goal off a Kabelo Dlamini feed for a 3-1 win.

A difficult call between Maswanganyi and Mofokeng who both had a big say in this match.

But goals being counted, Maswanganyi might have to walk away with this one, especially after being quiet in recent weeks.

It has been a difficult season for Richards Bay who have also been struggling in the Premier Soccer League.

Following their exit from the Nedbank Cup, Richards Bay will now be pushing to stay safe from relegation as they have just two points more than basement side Magesi FC.

The Buccaneers now prepare to face traditional rivals Kaizer Chiefs in next Saturday's Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium.

A day earlier, Richards Bay will host Premier Soccer League basement side Magesi.
