  • WHAT HAPPENED?

At just 19, Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi is living his dream as far as football is concerned.

He has played in the Caf Champions League semi-final with Bucs, and faced Nigeria, recently, in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

This weekend, he might win his first major trophy when Pirates play Stellenbosch in the MTN8 final.

All these have happened to a teenager who played his first senior game in March this year.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

With his performances, it is safe to say Mbokazi is now guaranteed a place in Hugo Broos' Bafana Bafana.

However, Amajita want a piece of the central defender ahead of the U20 World Cup that will be played in Chile from September 27.

The situation is tricky since the Soweto giants will need all their best players to compete both domestically and in the CAF Champions League.

SAFA President Danny Jordaan hopes the Sea Robbers can allow the youngster to serve the country since it will benefit all the parties involved.

    WHAT JORDAAN SAID

"We have never had such an excellent defender at that age, and the opportunity to play in the U20 World Cup is great because you have the whole world watching," he said as quoted by SABC Sport.

"I hope we can find an understanding on the matter with Orlando Pirates. I think we have an excellent U20 team, and I'm hoping that Mbokazi can go with them, because if he goes, our defence will be really solid.

We have a talented goalkeeper, and the midfield and attack are very good too," Jordaan concluded.

    WHAT NEXT?

Well, it is a dilemma for Pirates since Mbokazi is needed by the club and the country in equal measure.

Regardless of the decision that will be made, Mzansi have a chance to make an impact in the global scene after conquering Africa.
