    WHAT HAPPENED?

Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa has set an ambitious target in order to win back his place with the Bafana Bafana.

To get Broos' attention, the 28-year-old Bucs forward said he hopes to score as many goals as possible. However, Mabasa is aware of the stiff competition for the national team slots, given the kind of players available for Broos to choose from.

    WHAT MABASA SAID

“Perhaps in a span of eight games, score like 15 goals, and make that decision easy that he has to choose me. Not for it to be as difficult as it has been," Mabasa told SoccerBeat as per FARPost.

“For now, he’s able to go with any striker that he’s picked [before]. There’s Lyle [Foster], there’s Evidence [Makgopa], there’s myself, and Iqraam [Rayners]. We are all doing well in our own rights; we are scoring goals this season and last season as well," he added.

“So, whoever he picks right now, it’s a bit of a difficult decision for him. But like I said, I want to be at a point where I make that decision easy for him through my performances. So, let my performances speak for me."

“In a span of eight games, let’s say I score 15 goals; there’s no way I wouldn’t be selected for the national team. My job is to try and make it easier for him," he concluded.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Last season, Mabasa won the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Golden Boot after netting 16 goals. However, Broos has opted for other options whenever he has named his squads.

Lyle Foster and Relebohile Mofokeng were among the strikers selected for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin and scored. This shows how determined they are to keep their positions, meaning that Mabasa has to pull up his socks even more if he has to get back to Bafana.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MABASA?

As club football returns after the international break, Mabasa's hope should be to find the back of the net more regularly in order to boost his Bafana chances.

With Pirates challenging on three fronts; PSL, Nedbank Cup, and the Champions League, Mabasa has the stage to strive and hit his goal targets.
