    WHAT HAPPENED?

Orlando Pirates kept their Nedbank Cup title defence on track by defeating Baroka to progress to the last eight, where they will face SuperSport United.

Since joining the club in 2019, Tshegofatso Mabasa has been on a remarkable goalscoring trajectory and is now just 10 goals away from surpassing Benedict Vilakazi as the club’s all-time top scorer.

His recent hat-trick against Bakgakga took his tally to 12 goals across all competitions this season.

With his consistent form, he continues to be a vital asset for the Buccaneers in their pursuit of silverware.

His ability to deliver in crucial moments has made him a key figure in the squad.

Pirates will rely on his finishing prowess as they aim for further success this season.

    WHAT MABASA SAID

“Definitely, it’s something that I’m looking at [breaking records],” Mabasa told the media as reported by iDiski Times.

“Like I said, as a striker, I pride myself on the chances that I take and the goals that I score.

“Being able to leave a mark, leave a legacy at this club is something really great for me, and obviously, being a club that I supported from a very young age, it will really mean a lot to me, and it is something that I am chasing and looking forward to doing.

“I pride myself on the goals that I scored. It’s truly something special, and if there is such a record at the club of the number of hat-tricks for Orlando Pirates, it’s something that I am definitely looking for. I am looking to break each and every record that I can stumble across. I am here.

“Hitting the back of the net feels great, especially if you are a striker. It’s my ability in front of goals. I think the whole country knows about me and knows about that."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

With a dozen goals in all competitions this season, Mabasa is making a strong case for a Bafana Bafana call-up.

The upcoming Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin in March could be an opportunity for Hugo Broos to consider his inclusion.

His consistency in front of goal is proving that he can contribute at the international level.

If he continues his fine form, he could force the national team selectors to take notice.

His performances are elevating both his personal ambitions and Pirates' chances of success.

    WHAT NEXT FOR PIRATES?

Pirates return to league action against Golden Arrows, aiming to bounce back after their recent defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Buccaneers will be determined to regain momentum in the league.

A win would keep them in the race for a strong finish this season.

Mabasa will be looking to continue his goal-scoring streak and help his team secure vital points.
