Orlando Pirates Player Ratings: Hat-trick hero Saleng too hot to handle for Swallows FC

The goalkeeper looked shaky at times and was first saved by the offside flag when a weak punch of the ball saw Swallows score. Could not do much to prevent Swallows’ goal but failed to deal with a couple of balls in the box. Was also beaten at his near post with Paseka Mako saving his blushes with a goal-line clearance.

Sipho Chaine 5/10

The right-back was solid both in defence and attack and won a number of ground duels. His biggest contribution was a goal-line clearance when Swallows nearly scored after Chaine failed to save at his near post.

Paseka Mako 7/10

Looked good going forward and started the move that yielded the second goal when he found Thembinkosi Lorch in space before he passed to Terrence Dzvukamanja to score. Made some dangerous challenges but was largely not troubled at left-back.

Deon Hotto 6/10

Captain of the day, Xoki was not troubled much and marshalled the defence in the absence of suspended duo Nkosinathi Sibisi and Innocent Maela. He won key aerial battles as Pirates dominated their opponents.

Tapelo Xoki 7/10

The former South Africa U20 star made his first competitive start of the season, replacing the suspended Sibisi and after initially looking good, he lost his markers a couple of times. He also failed to close down Mthokozisi Shwabule before he scored the consolation for Swallows.

Sandile Mthethwa 5.5/10

The former AmaZulu captain made his first start since joining the Bucs in January and brought calmness in midfield. He rarely got a foot wrong with his passing and defence impressive. His performance might earn him more starts after previous substitute appearances.

Makhehlene Makhaula 6.5/10

Making his 18th appearance of the season, Timm was key to Pirates’ solidity in defence. He controlled the tempo of the game and slotted in defence whenever he was needed. One such move saw him make a great clearance with Chaine beaten.

Miguel Timm 7/10

Replaced Vincent Pule in the starting line-up and provided two assists, first finding Saleng with a lovely cutback before teeing him up again later in the second half. There was a nervous moment when he was stretchered off after a collision with Mako but he soon returned to continue.

Kabelo Dlamini 7/10

A much-improved game from Lorch after his struggles against Kaizer Chiefs, the forward was a menace for the Swallows defence on the left wing. He played a big role in the third goal when he run onto the ball before finding Dlamini who squared to Saleng to complete his brace.

Thembinkosi Lorch 6/10

Another good day at the office for the on-form winger who scored a hat-trick, his first, for Pirates. His first goal was a collector’s item as he showed great feet and confidence to score via a backheel before hammering home his side’s third in the second half.He put the icing on the cake with his third after getting on the end of Kermit Erasmus’ pass to complete a swift counter-attacking move.

Monnapule Saleng 10/10

The Zimbabwean forward has turned around his season and scored his third goal of the campaign when he got on the end of a Lorch pass to make it 2-0 two minutes after the break. His link-up play was impressive and also dropped deep on occasions to provide space for Lorch and Saleng.

Terrence Dzvukamanja 7.5/10

Came in with 17 minutes remaining and set up Saleng for his hat-trick with a lovely pass against the run of play.

Kermit Erasmus 6.5/10

The new signing replaced Lorch in the 73rd minute but had little impact on the game, his lack of understanding with his new teammates evident.

Souaibou Marou 4/10

A late introduction, the midfielder acted as an extra body in midfield as the Bucs saw out the game.
